General William T. Sherman, USA
(1820 - 1891)
General Sherman is best known for his infamous March to the Sea in 1864. He was born in Lancaster, Ohio and served with distinction in the Mexican War.
During the Civil War, he commanded large numbers of Union troops from 1861 through 1863 at Bull Run, Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Chattanooga. In 1864, he led a campaign to capture Atlanta, Georgia. Upon Confederate retreat, the city was burned, then was largely pillaged by Sherman’s troops.
Afterwards, he led his army from Atlanta and cut across to the port city of Savannah. Much of everything in between was destroyed or burned. From 1869 to 1883, Sherman served as commander-in-chief of the U.S. Army.
