General Ulysses S. Grant, USA
(1822 - 1885)

U.S. Grant was born in Ohio on April 27, 1822. He attended West Point and fought in the Mexican War.

Known once as a depressed drinker in his pre-war days, Grant hardly touched the bottle for the rest of his life. He eventually became a brigadier general and gained one of the first Union victories of the war at Fort Donelson in 1862.

At Fort Donelson, Grant demanded immediate and unconditional surrender of the Confederate stronghold. Upon the fort's fall, Grant became a national hero and people exclaimed that U.S. Grant actually stood for "Unconditional Surrender" Grant. He went on to receive Robert E. Lee's surrender and later became the 18th President of the United States.
