General Joshua L. Chamberlain, USA
(1828 - 1914)
Joshua Chamberlain was born in Maine on September 8, 1828. In the years before the Civil War, he was a professor at Bowdoin College. He joined the Union Army in 1862, serving with honor at Fredericksburg, Petersburg and many other battles throughout the bloody conflict.
Chamberlain is best known for his defense of a hill now called Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg.
He was wounded a total of six times during the war and eventually received the Medal of Honor for his actions at Gettysburg. At war's end, he became governor of Maine and later, president of his alma mater.
